The exam, day by day (UBE)

Minnesota administers the standard NCBE Uniform Bar Examination over two consecutive days, in person, on the standard NCBE calendar.

Day 1 — MEE morning, MPT afternoon

• MEE — morning. Six essay questions, 30 minutes each. Tests Business Associations, Civil Procedure, Conflict of Laws, Constitutional Law, Contracts (with UCC Article 2), Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Family Law, Real Property, Torts, Trusts and Estates, Secured Transactions (UCC Article 9), and Federal Civil Procedure. Crossover questions are common.
• MPT — afternoon. Two performance tests, 90 minutes each. Closed-universe lawyering tasks. Common formats: persuasive brief, objective memorandum, demand letter, motion, will, contract clause.

Day 2 — MBE

• MBE. 200 NCBE multiple-choice questions across two three-hour sessions. Subjects: Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Real Property, Torts.

How it is graded (260 cut score)

The UBE produces one scaled score on a 400-point scale, weighted MBE 50% / MEE 30% / MPT 20%. Minnesota’s passing score is 260. The score is portable: a passing UBE score is transferable to any other UBE jurisdiction whose cut score equals or falls below 260, generally within a 3-year window from the date the score was earned.

Fees and deadlines (2026)

The MN BLE fee schedule for 2026: $600 timely, $200 late fee, $100 laptop fee. February 2026 deadline: October 15, 2025 (timely), December 1, 2025 (late). July 2026 deadline: March 16, 2026 (timely), May 1, 2026 (late). Plan ahead — missing the timely deadline can cost several hundred dollars in late fees.

Character & Fitness

Minnesota Character & Fitness review is conducted by MN BLE concurrently with the bar application. Character & Fitness fee: included in application fee. The questionnaire asks about residence, employment, criminal/civil litigation, financial responsibility, academic discipline, and prior bar applications. Disclose everything; failure to disclose is treated more harshly than the underlying conduct.

The MPRE requirement (85 minimum)

Eligibility paths

To sit for the Minnesota Bar Examination you must hold a J.D. from an ABA-approved law school, or qualify under the foreign-trained path covered below.

Admission on motion

Under Minnesota Rule 7 (Admission Without Examination), an attorney admitted in another U.S. jurisdiction with 5 of the past 7 years may be admitted to the Minnesota Bar without bar exam. Foreign-trained applicants

Minnesota admits foreign-educated attorneys with either an LL.M. of at least 24 credit hours at an ABA-approved school covering specific U.S. law subjects, or substantial equivalence to a U.S. JD. The MPRE 85 requirement and Character & Fitness clearance still apply.

UBE score portability

A Minnesota passing UBE score (260+) is portable to any UBE jurisdiction whose cut score is at or below 260. Minnesota accepts transferred UBE scores at the 260 floor within 3 years. Several jurisdictions also recognize NextGen UBE score transfers.

Strategy by section

MBE strategy

The MBE rewards process. Read the call first. Eliminate two answers fast (wrong rule, wrong subject, missing element), then choose between the remaining two. Time budget: 1.8 minutes per question.

MEE strategy

Lead with the issue, state the rule in 1-2 sentences, apply the rule in element order, conclude. Headers help graders find your analysis. Don’t bury the conclusion.

MPT strategy

Spend 25-30 minutes reading and outlining; write to the format the task memo demands. Cite only Library authorities; no outside law.

For repeat takers
