The exam, day by day (UBE)

Massachusetts administers the standard NCBE Uniform Bar Examination over two consecutive days, in person, on the standard NCBE calendar.

Day 1 — MEE morning, MPT afternoon

• Multistate Essay Examination (MEE) — morning. Six essay questions, 30 minutes each. Tests Business Associations (Agency, Partnership, Corporations, LLCs), Civil Procedure, Conflict of Laws, Constitutional Law, Contracts (with UCC Article 2), Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Family Law, Real Property, Torts, Trusts and Estates, Secured Transactions (UCC Article 9), and Federal Civil Procedure. Crossover questions are common.
• Multistate Performance Test (MPT) — afternoon. Two performance tests, 90 minutes each. Closed-universe lawyering tasks built from a File (facts) and a Library (legal authorities).

Day 2 — MBE

• Multistate Bar Examination (MBE). 200 NCBE multiple-choice questions across two three-hour sessions. Subjects (federal law only): Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Real Property, Torts.

How it is graded (270 cut score)

The UBE produces one scaled score on a 400-point scale, weighted MBE 50% / MEE 30% / MPT 20%. Massachusetts’s passing score is 270. The score is portable: a passing UBE score is transferable to any other UBE jurisdiction whose cut score equals or falls below 270, generally within a 3-year window from the date the score was earned (some jurisdictions allow up to 5 years).

Fees and deadlines

The BBE fee schedule for 2026: $815 first-time and repeat, $175 laptop fee, $1,015 admission on motion. February 2026 filing window: November 1, 2025. July 2026 filing window: Filing window April 6 through May 8, 2026. Plan ahead: missing the early-fee deadline can cost you several hundred dollars.

Character & Fitness

Massachusetts Character & Fitness review is conducted by the BBE concurrently with the bar application. No separate fee. Character & Fitness fee: included in application fee. The questionnaire asks about residence history, employment, criminal and civil litigation, financial responsibility (including bankruptcies), academic discipline, and prior bar applications. Disclose everything; failure to disclose is treated more harshly than the underlying conduct.

The MPRE requirement (85 minimum)

Massachusetts requires a passing MPRE score of 85, on the standard NCBE 50-150 scale. The MPRE is administered three times per year (March, August, November) by computer at Pearson VUE testing centers. Most candidates take the MPRE during their final year of law school or the summer after graduation. Pass rates over time

Approximately 79 percent overall (July 2025 administration). Approximately 86 percent first-time (July 2025). February sittings consistently run lower than July (heavier repeater pool). Massachusetts historically tracks within a few points of the national UBE average.

Eligibility paths

To sit for the Massachusetts Bar Examination you must hold a J.D. from an ABA-approved law school, or qualify under the foreign-trained path covered below. Massachusetts is an in-person, two-day jurisdiction; remote testing is not available outside narrow accommodations.

Admission on motion

Under SJC Rule 3:01 Section 6 (Admission by Motion), an attorney admitted in another U.S. jurisdiction with 5 of the last 7 years of qualifying practice may be admitted to the Massachusetts Bar without taking the bar exam. The fee is $1,015. Not reciprocity-limited — massachusetts admits experienced attorneys from any u.s. jurisdiction meeting the practice test. The MPRE 85 requirement still applies. Foreign-trained applicants

Massachusetts SJC Rule 3:01 allows foreign-educated applicants to sit if they (a) hold a J.D. equivalent foreign degree from a common-law jurisdiction, or (b) complete an LL.M. of at least 24 credit hours at an ABA-approved school covering the BBE-mandated subjects. UBE score portability

A Massachusetts passing UBE score (270+) is portable to any UBE jurisdiction whose cut score is at or below 270. Massachusetts accepts transferred UBE scores from any UBE jurisdiction at the 270 floor within 3 years (5 years in some categories — verify on the BBE site). Starting July 2026, several adopting jurisdictions also recognize NextGen UBE score transfers at 616 on the 500-750 scale.

How to prepare

An eight-week, 50-hour-per-week study arc is the standard full-time path:

• Weeks 1-2 (Foundation): Watch lecture videos for all 7 MBE subjects plus MEE-only subjects. Build skeletal outlines.
• Weeks 3-4 (Application): Daily 33-question MBE sets in mixed subjects. Begin essay practice (1 timed essay every other day).
• Weeks 5-6 (Volume): Push MBE volume to 50-75 daily. Add MPT practice. MEE-only subjects become essay focus.
• Weeks 7-8 (Simulation and rest): Two full-day simulated exams. Light review and rest in the final 5 days.

Strategy by section

MBE strategy

Read the call of the question first. Eliminate two answers fast (wrong rule, wrong subject area, missing element), then choose between the remaining two. Time budget: 1.8 minutes per question.

MEE strategy

Lead with the issue, state the rule in 1-2 sentences, apply the rule to facts in element order, conclude. Headers help graders find your analysis.

MPT strategy

Spend the first 25-30 minutes reading the File and Library and outlining. Write to the format the task memo demands. Cite only Library authorities; no outside law.

For repeat takers

The single best predictor of retake success is your MBE scaled score from your last sitting. Diagnose the limiting component first; build the retake around it. If MBE was below 130, prioritize 1,500-2,000 mixed MBE questions during your retake arc. If MEE/MPT were the limiters, get graded essay feedback. The pattern recognition that rises with practice is what you need.

The NextGen transition

Massachusetts will administer the NextGen UBE starting July 2028. NextGen will not test Conflict of Laws, Family Law, Secured Transactions, or Trusts & Estates and will add lawyering-skills questions (negotiation, client counseling). Practical takeaway: prepare for the legacy UBE for the July 28-29, 2026 sitting and any Feb 2027 / July 2027 sitting; switch to NextGen-format prep when the transition arrives.
