Florida Bar Exam News & Format Changes

One-line summary
Florida continues with its long-standing two-day format (3 essays + 100 Florida MC + 200 MBE). No UBE adoption. No NextGen adoption announced. The 136 cut score and 80 MPRE minimum have been stable.
Why Florida is not on the UBE
Florida considers Florida-specific law (especially Florida Civil Procedure, Homestead, and Family Law) sufficiently distinct that a uniform national exam would not adequately test admission to the Florida Bar. The Florida Board of Bar Examiners has consistently rejected UBE adoption proposals. The result: every Florida attorney has demonstrated proficiency in Florida-specific subjects, but UBE-state attorneys cannot transfer scores into Florida.
No reciprocity
Florida does not offer admission on motion. Every attorney who wants to practice in Florida must take the Florida Bar Examination, regardless of years of practice or admission elsewhere. NextGen status
The National Conference of Bar Examiners is rolling out the NextGen Bar Exam beginning 2026 to 2028 in adopting jurisdictions. Florida has not announced NextGen adoption. Cut score and MPRE stability
Florida’s combined cut score has been 136 of 200 for many years. The MPRE minimum has been 80 throughout. Both are stable.
What this means for your study plan
Bar review courses for Florida have stable curricula because the format is stable. Confirm the current cycle’s test specifications on the Florida Board of Bar Examiners site before you commit to a course or study plan, but the structural content has not changed in years.
